Academic Support

A Pennsylvania-certified teacher and two aides supply instruction and support for HMS students with learning differences so they find success academically (First though Grade 8 as needed). The learning support staff provides support both inside and outside the students' classrooms. They also supply resources for classroom teachers to help them better meet the needs of their students with learning differences.

Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13, one of 29 intermediate units across Pennsylvania, is a regional educational agency whose mission is to assist local school districts to enhance educational opportunities by providing quality, cost-effective services.  The IU-13 non-public division provides professional and support staff for HMS students with remediation in math and reading as well as speech or language learning differences.  The IU-13 also provides staff development and material resources to help ensure that the needs of every child can be accommodated.

Students are referred for SST when a teacher feels the need for a team effort in assessing the academic or behavioral needs of the child.  A team consisting of the SST Case leader, teachers, and parents meet together to brainstorm and analyze the needs of the child.  Specific, measurable goals are determined for the child as well as planning for how they will be carried out and who is responsible for the implementation.  Follow-up meetings are held periodically to reassess the goals to determine if changes need to be made.  Students may be referred for formal psychological evaluation as a result of an SST meeting.
