Music is a gift from God and plays an important role in children's lives, with each individual having something to offer whether vocally, instrumentally or appreciatively. Along with gaining knowledge of music skills and the development of an appreciation of the broad range of musical arts, the students will be challenged to use their varying musical abilities to praise and honor God. Hymns that have been a part of the rich, Mennonite musical heritage along with the music of the diverse, contemporary world are used for choral instruction. The Christmas and the Fine Arts Day programs serve as venues for musical performance.
Primary- In the primary grades students receive instruction in basic rhythmic and melodic concepts. Singing and movement to music help to reinforce these concepts.
Upper Elementary - Grades three, four and five continue to develop their understanding of melodic form, rhythm and notation. The identification of musical instruments and composers is begun, along with learning to play the recorder. Singing voices continue to be developed and part singing is introduced.
Middle School - Sixth, seventh and eighth grades focus on developing choral skills, studying music history, and extending their music skills. Middle school students have the opportunity to serve the school community by singing with a worship team for middle school chapels.
