The library/media program provides students with information management skills and informational and recreational reading opportunities on a weekly basis. Information management skills are taught as integrated components of the curriculum. Literature appreciation is emphasized at all grade levels.
Primary - Along with learning how to use the library media center as a resource for learning, kindergarten through second grade students learn how to care for books, identify the parts of books and learn how they are organized in their respective locations in the library media center. Although the main emphasis at this level is literature appreciation through fiction and non-fiction works, second graders do begin to use reference materials such as encyclopedias for simple research.
Upper Elementary - Third graders' skills include learning to use the online catalog to locate resources both for their personal enrichment and for research assignments in their classrooms. Biographies and historical fiction are explored in depth. Fourth and fifth graders use the Big Six approach to research and expand their use of reference materials, magazines and internet resources.
Middle School- Sixth, seventh and eighth graders continue developing their research skills in conjunction with assignments they are given in their classes. They are also expected to read recreationally in areas of personal interest. Sixth graders receive study skills instruction in addition to library skills. Library lessons are closely linked to standards set by the American Association of School Librarians.
