The focus of the art curriculum is toward both the appreciation of works of art and the production of art. Children will have opportunity to develop their artistic skills. Each student will be encouraged to express his/her own unique creativity as an individual made in the image of the Creator.
Primary - First and second grade students are introduced to several different forms of art including painting, collage, drawing, printmaking, and working with clay. They look at and discuss artwork from a variety of cultures and time periods. Students create many of their own pieces of art to contribute to their art portfolio.
Upper Elementary - Third through fifth grade students are encouraged to express themselves creatively through guided experimentation. Forms of art practiced at this level include drawing, painting, collage, fiber arts, clay, calligraphy and two- dimensional design. Students are exposed to works of art by major artists from a variety of cultures and time periods. Art, fine crafts, and folk art of the local area are also referred to.
Middle School - Sixth through eighth grade students continue to use a variety of art mediums including sculpture, drawing, painting, bookmaking, printmaking, collage, and clay. They are encouraged to develop an understanding that art is a discipline interpreted differently by each individual. Research on chosen artists and representational artwork done by the students is also practiced at this level.
