Special Giving Project - Hands-on Learning Lab - Goal $12,200

  • Each year at the Auction, a special giving project is chosen that highlights a tangible need for our school program and students.
  • The 2014 Special Giving Project will fund a Hands-on Learning Lab to be used by all students.  Education at HMS is very much about making learning meaningful, hands-on, and connected as much as possible to real-life. Through the years, these kinds of projects have by necessity been assembled and dissassembled during every class period and squeezed into hallways, the edges of classrooms, storage closests and around hot lunch preparation space.
  • Our special giving project will develop and furnish a space to facilitate this kind of work.  The Hands-on Learning Lab will feature large, study table space, long counters and storage areas for students work.  It will have a kitchen stove, refrigerator, sink and counter space for basic food projects.  The space will be shared by all grade levels for the following kinds of classes:
    • Family & Consumer Science classes (i.e. cooking, sewing projects)
    • Academic Extension program (ask this year's students about their Rube-Goldberg machines)
    • Early childhood snack preparation
    • Table space for elementary science labs
    • Project space for Schoolwide Enrichment Clusters
    • Middle School clubs
  • 2014 Goal:   $12,200 for a Hands-on Learning Lab
    • $100 for a chair/stool x 20
    • $200 for a table x 6
    • $300 for student project space (shelf/counter storage space) x 20
    • $500 for equipment (appliances/whiteboard/etc.) x 6
  • Thanks to many generous hearts, last year we were able to raise $13,800 to equip all of our classrooms--15 in all--with new LCD projectors.  Teachers also began piloting the use of iPad minis in preparation for introducing their use with students this year.  We are in the process of purchasing more iPads which classes can use for research and learning activities.
  • A note about the use of technology and hands-on learning:  While it may seem that the use of technology and hands-on learning stand at odds with one another, at HMS we are committed to helping students find a balance.  Learning involves both how students access and apply useful information.  Christ-centered and child-focused education teaches students to be thoughtful and discerning learners so that they can engage the world in ways that are appropriate and innovative.
  • You can donate to this project directly at the Special Giving Project stand at the auction, by adding a donation to your auction bill at check-out, or by sending your contribution directly to the school marked for the 2014 Special Giving Project.
